Required Materials: Text & External Hard Drive

The requirements for using the hard drive to edit on Final Cut are as follows:

* FireWire interface recommended
* Minimum 7,200 RPM speed
* Minimum 8MB cache

You can use a USB External Hard Drive.  The USB ones are slower, but they do work.  Other than that, the biggest determination is the amount of memory.  250GB is the minimum.  That will get your through this class, but I can’t guarantee that it will get you through the rest of your life in EMC.  The basic rule of thumb: you get about 5 minutes of video per GB of storage.  Nearly every drive that meets the above requirements will be more than sufficient to do your video projects for class.

If you already own a drive and it's formatted for Windows, it can be changed to Macintosh, but you will lose the data stored on the drive.  If you have a Macintosh formatted drive, you may need to change the format because of Final Cut Pro.  We can reformat them so that the drives will work with both MAC and PC.

The Final Cut Pro editing software is provided by MTSU on campus computers.  You will be learning how to use Final Cut Pro, but you can also use other editing programs.

Attendance: You are expected to attend lecture and labs.  You will be permitted 3 absences.  Beyond that, I will deduct a full letter grade from your final grade for each additional absence.  Physician’s notes (unless you are registered with disabled student services or you catch the H1N1 Flu, etc.) will NOT be accepted.  Conversely, perfect attendance will get you a 5 point bonus on your final grade.  Tardiness is unacceptable.  If you are more than 10 minutes late to class it will be counted as an absence.  If you are not at the start of class when we have a guest speaker, you’re absent.  Arrive on campus early to get a parking space.

Conduct in Class: There are no dumb questions.  Ask questions!  I sometimes will use industry phrases and words that you may not be familiar with yet.  Let me know.  This is a very small class and you will get 1-on-1 teaching and help from me.  I want you to succeed!  If you fall asleep in class I will ask you to leave, and it will count as an absence.  This is probably the only class where you can use your cell phones for research during class.  Texting is NOT permitted.  Also, please log off of any social websites on your computers.  Class is a place for learning, not a place to socialize.  If you fail to follow these rules I will ask you to leave class.  If you are asked to leave class it will count as an absence.

Plagiarism: Plagiarism will not be tolerated in this course.  If I find that you plagiarized I will give you a zero for that assignment and this may cause you to fail the class.  You are NOT allowed to use video you did not shoot; that includes video from a website.  Please take time to review the university’s Academic Integrity & Misconduct policy: http://www.mtsu.edu/judaff/integrity.shtml

Disabled Students:
Reasonable Accommodations for Students with Disabilities: If you have a disability that may require assistance or accommodations, or if you have any questions related to any accommodation for testing, note taking, reading, etc., please speak with me as soon as possible. You may also contact the Office of Disabled Student Services (898-2783) with any questions about such services.

Course grading system:  The grading in this course is subjective.

100-90=A  89-80=B  79-70=C  69-60=D  59-0=F

Things you will learn: The key purpose of this course is for students to understand the fundamentals of what it takes to plan, research, shoot, edit and post video for a website and mobile device.  Topics to be learned include:  how to compose a Production Proposal, Researching Productions, Proper Shooting for Web/Mobile Devices and Editing on Final Cut Pro.  You will gain an understanding of the production process and written presentation of message design as specifically required by various media formats and applications.

Final:  Your final will include, but not be limited to, a long-form Web/Mobile video.  Worth 30 points.

New Media Presentation:  At some point during the semester you will give a presentation on an aspect of New Media to the class.  Worth 15 points.

Quizzes: Quizzes will cover what we have learned throughout the semester.  If you miss a quiz due to an absence you get a zero.  Your lowest quiz grade will be dropped.  Worth 10 points.

Daily Participation:  Show up to class and ask questions!  Offer your opinion!  Be an active participant in daily discussions, presentations & guest speakers!  The more you put into the class the more you will get out. Worth 10 points.

General Projects:  This will include writing, editing and shooting assignments. Worth 20 points.
